Carson is one of Tallahassee’s most sought after percussionists and educators. As a percussionist, Carson was trained extensively in the marching and classical disciplines. At an early age, he begun studying with Dr.Mark Eichenberger and Scott Simon who have worked with world class drum corps as members and instructors (Phantom Regiment, Santa Clara Vanguard, The Academy). Later in his musical career, he begun formal classical study with Dr.Peter Soroka, who is now a member of the United States Military Band. The technique and musicianship he developed in these areas of study each influence his approach to the drum set. These influences enable Carson to create music with a unique and intriguing voice of his own. He has played in productions of Les Miserables and the Hunchback of Notre Dame and has played with Avis Berry, Electric Apostles, Stumblefeet, The Rachel Hillman Band, and is a current member of The Retrograde. Carson is a student at Florida State University, where he is studying jazz drums with Leon Anderson.
Not only are Carson’s performances full of energy and life, but so is his teaching style. His exceptional ability to communicate and articulate, coupled with his genuine enthusiasm creates a unique studio environment. Carson’s students can be seen in highly successful orchestral, symphonic, marching, and jazz ensembles across the greater Tallahassee area. Some of his students have gone on to be successful educators themselves, instructing award winning drumlines across the south east United States.
Carson’s note worthy accomplishments include participating in the 2018 and 2019 Omega Psi Phi Talent Hunt competition, where he received 1st place 2 years in a row at the local level and in both 2018 and 2019, won 3rd place in all of Florida. Carson is a 2020 finalist/winner in the state wide Bob Washington Jazz competition. Carson also received 1st place in the inaugural Elk Grove Solo Contest and was selected to open for the percussion festival. Carson has been noted as an “Outstanding Soloist” by the North Shore Jazz Festival Committee. Carson was also awarded the 2019 Louis Armstrong Jazz Award for his outstanding musical contribution to his jazz program. Carson has participated in numerous honor bands, including the FSU Tri-State Jazz Ensemble, as well as the Big Bend All County Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Band, and Symphonic Band, where he was first chair. Carson is a Bosphorus Cymbals artist.
